ROL DE LOS CUIDADOS PALIATIVOS EN EL SERVICIO DE EMERGENCIAS

Resumen
Las consultas de pacientes de cuidados paliativos (CP) (oncológicos y no onocológicos) al Servicio de Emergencias (SEM) se presentan con cierta frecuencia, especialmente cuando se acerca el final de la vida. El enfoque de la medicina paliativa basado en el paciente y su calidad de vida y el enfoque de la medicina de emergencias basado en la enfermedad se encuentran en aparente contraste; y aún no hay normas establecidas acerca del papel de los CP en el SEM. Por otro lado, la educación en CP tanto a estudiantes de medicina, como residentes, especialistas y el personal sanitario en general es escasa. En esta revisión se discute acerca de la importancia de los CP en los SEM, la integración de los mismos, el abordaje, las barreras de atención, los beneficios y el valor de agregar los CP a la formación académica.
